March Chinese coal exports plummet

Customs records show that Chinese coal exports shrank a further 52 per cent in March to just 1.45 million tonnes, at a time when Australian coal exporters are negotiating export deals that more than triple last year’s rates.
The Chinese export figure was down from an already reduced 3 million tonnes in February.

China’s supply curb has come as a result of government restrictions on coal exports, implemented to address serious power shortages in south and central regions of the country.

However commentators say that they expect the country’s exports to rebound in April to as much as 5 million tonnes – well above the 2007 monthly average of 4.43 million tonnes - as miners fight to cash in on high international prices.

This comes as Australian coking coal exporters are negotiating record foreign contracts of over $300 a tonne.
